| In
the school canteen environment of today, professional development
for canteen staff should be considered essential if staff
are to keep skills and knowledge up to date that will allow
them to keep pace with industry changes and legislative requirements.
As the peak body representing school canteens of all education
systems in WA, WASCA has a commitment to ensure provision
of appropriate industry training for canteen personnel. We
liaise closely with TAFE in the development and modification
of course content of the School Canteen Management Course,
to ensure the course keeps pace with industry changes and
requirements.
Subsidised by specific project funding, WASCA
also delivers workshops and other short courses throughout
the State, using qualified and experienced industry trainers,
in conjunction with other government and non-government health
agencies.

Canteen Food Service Short Course (StarCAP training)
This six-hour course is offered in various locations based
on demand. Completion of the course is a pre-requisite
to participation in the Star Canteen Accreditation Program
(StarCAP), and includes material that addresses the four
core areas of the program. Through training, participants
of the course become empowered to self-assess and improve
menus, develop skills in marketing and promoting food
sold, and design a canteen policy. Emphasis is also placed
on safe food handling to meet current legislative requirements.
StarCAP training is not currently available until the program has been modified to meet the Government Policy and Standards for Food and Drinks in Public School Food Service.
